I’m really excited to start this project. I know, I say that with basically every project. I must really like this school. And program. haha it definitely has me designing things that inspire me every step of the way. I did have some minor issues jumping into things in the beginning, but I’ve got a good grasp on things and better time management right now… so that’s helping! And I’m also super interested in these projects and am beginning to come up with some fun ideas and am constantly inspired by this city and the people so far!
Anyway, we’re doing a re-packaging project in my HCD class now. And had to research and choose a product. Here are my answers to the questionnaire, and photos as well as thoughts on what I’ll be doing with the design itself!

Bertolli (Olive Oil)
Olive oil is the oil obtained from the fruit of olive trees. It can only grow in certain regions, yet millions of people are involved in olive oil production throughout the world. Began in 1865 by the Bertolli family in Lucca, Tuscany. It’s actually their 150th year! “Viva Bertolli!”
To redesign the Bertolli Olive Oils in a modern fresh update that captures the light, healthy, and flavorful traits of olive oil. Bringing it up to date with the feel of their website. The end result will reflect the Tuscan ideal of “simplicity in food & life”.
Anyone that cooks and females who use it for new healthy cosmetic alternatives. Everyone is trying to eat better finally because people are realizing that the food industry is slowly killing us with all the processed foods and heavy fats.
Current Mode of Appeal?
Logos – logical factual statements
There are 3 main types of olive oils (not including the new organic option)
– Classico: mild taste; best for sauces, roasting, & grilling
– Extra Virgin: rich taste; best for dressings, marinades, & dips
– Extra Light (tasting): delicate test; best for sauteing, frying, and baking.
Does it have any components?
Ingredients: refined & unrefined olive oils
What are the benefits?
There are several health benefits of olive oil including: prevention of heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, cancers, oxidative stress, blood pressure, obesity, and osteoperosis!
What are the elements that must appear?
Nutritional facts, ingredients, barcode, contact info, manufacturer info, use by date, Lot# & origin, warnings, liquid volume
Has the material already been selected? Open for suggestions?
I’m planning on using a glass bottle that could be reused for other reasons and including a pour spout similar to liquor bottles (for ease of pouring when cooking and using it as a dressing or dip). I’m also planning on using seed paper (plantable) for the label. Still open to suggestions for everything though.
Must include Red & Gold form the Bertolli Logo. I’m planning to use seed paper because you can get seed paper that has herb seeds in it and it would be a great benefit to purchasing olive oil from this company! You can plant the paper and get fresh herbs (after some time) to use with your ingredients. The glass bottle must be light proof for the EVOO because of olive oil properties and how it’s affected by temperatures and such. The glass would be the best option for the overall bottle because olive oil stored in glass is better than stored in plastic. Olive oil will absorb the plastic of it’s container in the flavor and it could reduce the health benefits depending on what plastic is used. Bertolli recently switched to plastic to be more eco-friendly, but I don’t think that’s a wise choice.
Probably going to package it in a quad-pack and include the Organic Olive Oil, so that the consumer can taste the difference in the olive oils and how it affects their foods.
Retail Environment? (Mass Market vs. Boutique Shops)
The retail environment will be on a shelf amongst tons of other olive oils. I’m considering a point of purchase display as well and playing off the idea of an olive tree. It’ll be available in mass markets.
Unique Selling Point(s)?
– first exporter of olive oil
– pure & natural ingredients
– harvested from Mediterranean area before peak ripeness
– range includes rich variety & authentic flavors
