I recently read a couple articles for my HCD class that addresses the ever-changing role of a graphic designer. (There’s additional links available after clicking the link above).
Basically, as a collective whole, the designers of the industry today have more expected of them than say a typical “graphic designer” had back in the day. AIGA listed the competencies according to importance, and the first 5 seem to be what I’ve expected to be part of the job description. But while the rest of them weren’t necessarily unexpected, they were clarified for me. I’ve had a general idea that as a designer, I’d have to constantly be up to date on new technologies and trends in the design industry, but it was nice to have a solid description of the tasks as well as elaboration on what I would have to study and learn. These articles were definitely interesting and informative.
