Design and produce a captivating and informative poster for one of the performances in the Folly Theater’s Annual Jazz Series. Upon completion of the poster, extend the visual identity of the design to create additional promotional materials.
This was actually a really fun, yet challenging, design process. Absolutely none of my initial sketches was what I was envisioning and I scrapped numerous ideas and sketches before getting close what is pictured as the final product here. While the connection to Charlie Brown is still highly recognizable, I wanted to create a poster that alluded to the musical experience as well. Since the goal was to promote a concert, I wanted to hint the genre and musician behind the music instead of having it be all about Charlie Brown. To convey this, I opted for a type combination that was both fun and light-hearted with a modern touch. In addition to this, the graphic illustration is playing off Charlie Brown’s signature pattern and the visual aesthetic of the nostalgic Christmas knit sweater combined with a bird’s eye view of the piano silhouette.
This animation is featuring a snippet of the signature Charlie Brown song that we all know and love. My idea behind this is to highlight the upbeat dancing during the scene where the characters are on stage. I listened to the song closely to imitate the actual notes being played on the piano for the main melody (not including the harmony/other chords) and animated the keys to match (just a fun, small detail that was intended to be a nod of appreciation at the composer and the featured musician). The movement of each character is a simplified version of their dance style in the scene.
